Welcome, Aficionado, to perhaps the most important topic after smoking itself: the preservation of your treasures. A cigar is a living product. It breathes, it matures, it evolves. And its home is the humidor.

A humidor is more than just a box. It is a time capsule, a protective shield, and a maturation chamber. It is the guarantee that the work of the blender, the roller, and time was not in vain. Proper storage is not a luxury, but a necessity.

In this guide, we will take you by the hand and show you everything you need to know to set up your first treasure chest and care for your cigars perfectly.

The Golden Rules of Storage: The 70/70 Formula

Remember these numbers: approx. 70% relative humidity and approx. 18-21 °C (64-70 °F) temperature. These are the magic coordinates that simulate the climate of your cigars' tropical homeland.

  • Too dry? The cigar loses its essential oils, burns too fast and too hot, becomes harsh and brittle. The flavor dies.
  • Too humid? The cigar burns poorly, constantly goes out, can taste sour, and – the worst nightmare – it can mold.

Your goal is to keep this balance as constant as possible. And for that, you need the right equipment.

The Commissioning Ritual: How to Bring Your Humidor to Life

You can't just throw cigars into a new humidor. The dry wood would suck the moisture right out of your cigars. You must first "season" or condition it.

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the entire interior of the humidor (walls, floor, lid, dividers) with a clean, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Never use tap water! The lime and minerals are bad for the wood and the cigars.
  • Initial Humidification: Place a shallow dish or a small glass filled with distilled water inside the closed humidor. Leave it alone for 2-3 days. The wood will slowly absorb the moisture and acclimatize.
  • Activate Humidifier: While the humidor is conditioning, prepare your humidification system.
  • - Sponge/Polymer Humidifier: Place it in distilled water for about 10-15 minutes until it is fully saturated. Take it out, pat it dry, and place it in the humidor.
  • - Boveda Packs: Simply take them out of the plastic wrap and place them in the humidor. Done.
  • Calibrate Hygrometer: Trust is good, control is better. Calibrate your hygrometer before entrusting the fate of your cigars to it. (More on this in the next article!)
  • Patience: After removing the water dish, wait about another day for the humidity to stabilize at around 70%. Only then is your humidor ready for its precious inhabitants.

Congratulations, your treasure chest is open!
